Description:

Santino Atem Deng (PhD) is an experienced counsellor, educator, researcher and trainer – he specialised in mental health, family and parenting practices. 


He held many community leadership roles, experiences in managing community programs/projects, and have worked in various Government Departments and non-Governmental agencies/organisations in New Zealand and Australia.  

Santino currently works as a Community Development Facilitator/Trainer/Counsellor and Manager at SUDD Foundation, community-based or not-for-profit organisations in Melbourne, Australia.  


Santino completed his PhD study at Victoria University, Melbourne, where he investigated changes and challenges in South Sudanese family dynamics and parenting practices in Australia. His PhD research examines recent transitions in South Sudanese-Australian parenting practices from the perspectives of both parents and youth. Drawing on nuanced cultural understandings and contexts to explore various challenges and transitions in parenting after resettling in Australia, his findings provide new insights into South Sudanese parenting experiences that will help communities, policymakers and service providers offer improved family support. 


He also has a Master of Education (Counselling) and Bachelor of Education and has published widely on the settlement, community-based approach, mental health, family & parenting and presented at international conferences.
